Environmental Information Management System (EIMS) is a computer-based software application developed by IL&FS Ecosmart Limited (Ecosmart) that facilitates environmental and energy data acquisition and management within a processing industry (Steel, Cement, etc.) in a relational database. The EIMS software supports record retrieval for on-line processing and/or reporting of pollution load, energy parameters and has capability of reporting plant potential non-conformances to assist senior management of the plant for informed decision-making for improving the environmental performance and reporting requirements.

Figure A presents EIMS design flowchart. As shown in the figure, the EIMS can be defined into four distinct tiers:
1. Data acquisition tier: data collected from continuous on-line monitoring and field monitoring data (met data, air quality data (e.g., CO, NOx, PM10, PM2.5, wind speed and direction, temperature), water quality data, etc.)
2. Data repository tier: for real-time data repository and historical data retrieval
3. Data processing tier: for data analysis and forecasting
4. Presentation tier: for data communication

The economy of power production relies on optimal performance of major components such as boiler, turbine, feed water heaters, cooling water cycle, and pumps. The EIMS software is able to capture these system parameters, which can help the operating staff to optimize power plant operations to improve the operational economy and thereby reduce the cost of power generation. The EIMS system thus enables data collection, warehousing, analyzing (data mining) and reporting (graphical outputs) in one tool. The overall objective in establishing such a system is to help the Client in meeting the regulatory compliance requirement.

The software was developed within an industrial environment in close co-operation with the end users. The data validation checks, in-built in the software enhances data quality and consistency with its flexibility and user friendliness.

The EIMS software developed is unique as it combines the hands-on knowledge of environmental management experts, sectoral experts (steel industry experts) and software development professionals with an ease-of-use that allows managing data quickly, cost-effectively and with few errors.
