Installation of bundled composting project in the state of Tamil Nadu

Client: Integrated Waste Management & Urban Services (Tamil Nadu) Pvt. Ltd. (IWMUST)

Location: The compost plants are located in Tamil Nadu near Coimbatore in Erode, Coonoor, Mettupalayam, Udumalpet, Trichy, Pollachi

Project Description And Status:The objective of the MSW Compost Plants is to avoid methane emissions from anaerobic decomposition of municipal solid waste (MSW) in a dump site through controlled aerobic decomposition in a windrow composting process. The aerated composting process will avoid methane emissions and will also result in compost as a product that can be utilized as organic fertilizer for agricultural purposes. The Tamil Nadu Bundled Project will treat MSW from surrounding zones of Tamil Nadu and on average it will divert approximately 192,500 tonnes of waste per year that otherwise would be disposed in unmanaged dump sites if the project was not constructed.

IWMUST has taken up the initiative for marketing the compost produced from the plant along with sale of CDM benefits. The CDM benefits would act as means of subsidizing the price of compost and thus make the plant sustainable. The plant will manufacture organic manure, enriched by processing fruit, vegetable and other biodegradable Municipal Solid Waste.

All the six plants are expected to be commercially operational by March 2009.
