Project Description:Gujarat Urban Development Company Ltd. (GUDC) on behalf of Govt. of Gujarat and IL&FS Ecosmart Ltd. have jointly taken initiative to improve the energy efficiency of 159 Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) and 7 Municipal Corporations (MCs) in the State of Gujarat. The Street Lighting and Water & Sewage Pumping stations of the ULBs & MCs consume nearly 90% of their annual electricity bill. There is ample scope to reduce the energy consumption by approximately 40% for street lighting and 20% for water and sewage pumping systems. This will help in improving the bottom line of the cash starved ULBs & MCs.

Considering the energy saving potential and the financial condition of the ULBs & MCs, GUDC and IL&FS Ecosmart have joined hands to improve the energy efficiency of the ULBs through ESCO route and an MoU was signed on 16th January 2007 for this cause. The Energy Services Companies (ESCOs) will undertake a feasibility study through IGA and estimate the saving potential in both street lighting and water and sewage pumping systems. The energy saving measures would be implemented by the ESCOs after approval of the same by the Contracting Authority and would be maintained for a period of 7 years.
